9 Romantic Getaways in Michigan (By an Outdoor Guide!)
June 9, 2026
Looking for the ultimate romantic getaway in Michigan? From beach vibes to adventure-driven vacations and cozy cabins, here are Michigan’s best romantic destinations:
Why this blog? Hi there! My name is Maddy and while today I work as a Lake Superior-based outdoor guide, I grew up in the metro-Detroit area and spent every summer looking forward to spending time in the woods Up North. I’m stoked to help show you around some of my favorite places, both the spots I visited as a budding adventure lover in college and the places I’ve added to my personal map through working as an outdoor guide and travel writer.
Oh hey there! This blog uses affiliate links. That means if you choose to make a purchase based on my recommendation, I make a small kickback at no additional cost to you.
Romantic Getaway Ideas in Michigan:
In my opinion, the best sort of romantic getaway has a few key components. First, there should be a beach or at the very least a swimming hole. Second, there should be a cozy bakery and brewery. Lastly, cozy cabin options or lakefront lodging. With this in mind, here’s what I’ve got for you.
1) Explore the Art Coast in Saugatuck, Michigan
Saugatuck is a art and beach town on Lake Michigan perfect for couples looking to experience wineries, hike, and experience the local art scene. Check out romantic getaway downtown lodging and visit the Saugatuck Center for the Arts or visit an Artist’s studio.
For food in town, swing by the BARge then Lady Bird for wine. Go for an evening hike and watch the sunset from Oval Beach, or alternately check out Crow’s Nest Overlook. Don’t leave town without breakfast at Pumpernickel’s!
2) Wine tasting in Traverse City
Traverse City is the perfect getaway for couples looking for cabin-in-the-woods meets bustling coastal town. Here, grab coffee at Horizon Books (my all-time fav!) then spend the day out exploring. Check out Firefly Restaurant or get brunch and sail on a tall ship.

Spend your evening on the ultimate Traverse City wine tasting tour on the Old Mission Peninsula. With both secluded cabins and downtown condos to choose from, I tend to think Traverse City is a really ideal destination for couples with mixed goals. For example, I tend to want to spend a lot of my vacations outside exploring, while my partner Andy wants to fill the day with a variety of activities.
Traverse City offers access to nature, hiking and outdoor activities while still letting you explore a fun downtown area. Plus, beach access. Is Traverse City perfect? In my opinion basically!

3) Sauna trip to the Keweenaw Peninsula
If you’re looking for a unique romantic adventure and the idea of venturing as far north in Michigan as possible intrigues you, set a course for the Keweenaw Peninsula. The Keweenaw Peninsula has rugged shoreline and waterfalls, hiking and kayaking, so much to do outside and cabins in the woods to find some peace and quiet.
I actually think one of the most unique aspects of the Keweenaw Peninsula is that while there is great hiking, you can also find a lot of really scenic roadside stops with easy walks to reach, meaning that you can experience some really cool places and secluded beaches with your partner without having to hike to them.

Be sure to check out Takka Saunas, both the Hancock and Copper Harbor location and for history lovers, check out Quincy Mine. For cozy cabin options, check out the Expedition Inn or Keweenaw Waters Resort.

4) Retreat North tiny cabins
If you’re looking to escape deep into the Northern Michigan woods with all the aesthetics of camping without having to actually camp, check out Retreat North tiny cabins. This adorable little cabins are tucked in the forest canopy with a hot tub, kitchenette, showers and a bathroom, and an excellent view from the king bed.

Check out nearby Bellaire, Michigan for Short’s Brewery and a cozy small town day, then spend the evening enjoying the sauna on the property. This is definietly the ideal fall color getaway, can you imagine?

5) Sleeping Bear Dunes adventure trip
I grew up day dreaming about Sleeping Bear summers, running across dunes and watching the sun sink over Lake Michigan knowing that somewhere across the glittery surface of the Lake was Wisconsin. I’ve now spent countless summer weekends in the Sleeping Bear Dunes but two of my most recent trips stand out:
Two years ago, I went to the dunes with my grandma. One year ago, I took my fiancé to the dunes for the first time. Both trips had that special sort of living nostalgia quality to them, like they were already perfect memories even as they were lived.

If you’re going to visit the Sleeping Bear Dunes, there are a few key things I recommend you do with your partner. Note that a national park pass is required within the Sleeping Bear Dunes.
- Hike the Dune Climb all the way to Lake Michigan. This is a four-mile Michigan rite-of-passage style hike. Budget a whole half a day, pack water and wear shoes. Bonding experience for sure. Will make or break the relationship. (Make sure you both actually want to do a hard hike lol)
- Kayak the Crystal River with Crystal River Outfitters. So beautiful, less intense.
- Watch the sunset from Overlook Nine. Both of the photos above are from Overlook Nine.
- Take a surf lesson with Sleeping Bear Surf and Kayak
- Hike the Empire Bluff Trail

6) Porcupine Mountains Backcountry Cabin
If you’re looking for the ultimate adventure weekend that blends hiking, backpacking and a cabin weekend all into one, consider renting a backcountry cabin or yurt in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Personally I think the Porcupine Mountains are great for a few reasons. The area is relatively well-trafficked, well mapped and in my opinion makes for one of the more epic strong beginner-friendly backpacking trips. You can make a backpacking trip here even more cushy by booking one of the cabins instead of a campsite.

There are around 15 dry cabins in the park, all hike or ski in, and you can find a booking link here. Keep in mind these are rustic cabins, essentially a step up from a tent, but still make for a great trip. The Porkies can be buggy in the early summer, but August-October here is an absolute dream.

7) Mackinaw Island
If you’re looking for a classic Michigan romantic getaway, you really can’t miss Mackinaw Island. Situated between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, this island has no motorized vehicles, with travel limited to bikes and horses and buggies. I visited here last with my family as a teenager and it was so magical and I can’t wait to head back some day!
9) Pictured Rocks adventure trip
I firmly believe that popular things are popular for a reason, and nothing speaks to that theory quite like the Pictured Rocks. Here, you can find secluded campsites (my big hint to check out State Forest Campgrounds in the area), sea kayak the colorful cliffed coastline, and fin some of the best hiking and swimming holes in the state.
I’ve been on two longer trips here — once in college (below, left) and once with my now fiance (below, right).

It’s really important to keep in mind that kayaking on Lake Superior and in the Pictured Rocks is not a beginner-friendly activity and conditions on the Lake are both changeable and hazardous. In order to kayak on Superior, you’ll want to be sure you have a kayak with sealed bulkheads (pockets of air) in the front and back so the kayak doesn’t sink out from under you in the event of capsize, a deep water self-rescue, and local weather knowledge as well as immersion gear. If this doesn’t sound like you, book a guided tour.
