weekend on the north shore, minnesota✨☔️🍂 story time‼️ while we were in Grand Marais, Minnesota today, we were walking behind a man with a takeout box at Artists Point, a popular outdoor space near downtown and right on Lake Superior.

“Someone’s slacking. The trash is full,” he said. He looked around, shrugged, and left his trash on the ground next to the can.

Later, Bella and I came back with a trash bag and picked it up.

Please keep in mind when recreating in rural areas that we do not have the staff to pick up after your trash. There isn’t always a park ranger to come empty the trash whenever it fills. There aren’t the facilities, the resources or the people of a city.

When you’re a tourist in a town, you’re a guest in that town.

When you leave trash on the ground by the lake, it ends up in the lake. Lake Superior holds 10% of the world’s freshwater.

It’s the primary drinking water source for so many, including me.

Your trash is your responsibility, even when it’s inconvenient to you.

Leave no trace ethics do not end at the trailhead.

i’ve spent the last four years practicing finding beauty in dark places ✨🍂❄️ learning to love the winter, the parts of a long dark night that are lovely, the bare trees in moonlight.

for me, november and march are always the hardest months to love— they feel gray and colorless, but that’s not always true.

here are some of my favorites from novembers; a reminder to myself to look for the bright spots and hang in there. even in novembers, there is something beautiful here— there is something here worth fighting for 💗

Lake Superior gales season is ✨here✨☔️🌊 every November, things pick up on the Big Lake and we see waves in excess of 25 ft!!

Here’s a few tips for Great Lakes wave watching:⬇️

1- safety first! Stay away from the edges of cliffs and places where the waves sweep over. Remember that wave heights are not uniform; just because it doesn’t look like waves have been washing over somewhere doesn’t mean a large wave won’t wash over there.

2- check the marine forecast to see what wave heights will be. Windy.com is a good resources

3- it’s cold out when it looks like this! Dress for the wet

4- best spots to watch waves are places where the shoreline is fully exposed to the wind and waves on lake superior! Points and cliffs make a good place to start :)

5- check out Split Rock Lighthouse or Tettegouche state park in Minnesota for northeast or east storms
